Educational Activities

6th April-9th April’2011: Special Adventure Course for Four Days:

Kalimpong Science Centre had organizing a Special Adventure Course for Four Days in collaboration with OFF ROAD/H.M.I.-Darjeeling. On the same occasion the Centre had organized a Night Sky Observation Program in order to develop interest towards astronomy.

The school participated in this course were:

                        i.            Kumudini Higher Secondary School, Kalimpong
       
ii.            St. Augustine School. Kalimpong,
     
 iii.            Mount Carmel School, Kalimpong
    
  iv.            Bethany School, Chibo Busty, Kalimpong

In this four days adventure course total 35 students had participated.

All the participants awarded with certificate of participation.

On the closing ceremony i.e. on 9th May’2011, the Chief Guest of the day was Dr. Harka Bahadur Chhetri, MLA-15th Assembly Election (West Bengal), Kalimpong Sub-Division, Dist. Darjeeling and Guest of Honour was Suva Pradhan, Kalimpong.

Kalimpong Science Centre had celebrated World environment day on 5th June 2011. The program schedule was as follows:

  1. The Centre had invited students from schools who fall under the “Kalimpong Nursery School Welfare Association” to participate in the rally on 5th June 2011. The rally started from Kalimpong Town Hall up to 10th mile Kalimpong and than they were taken to Kalimpong Science Centre. The students during the rally displayed environmental awareness to the public.

  2. The students after reaching the Centre did plantation of Saplings of various kinds of trees. They planted about 200 saplings in the vacant area of Kalimpong Science Centre.

  3. After the plantation was over the Centre had organized a “Painting Competition” for the students who had come there. Students from Class I- V had participated in the contest. There were around 150 students from 17 schools to participate. The theme given to them was “Tree”.

  4. As soon as the competition was over the students were taken to the auditorium where the students were shown movie on Environmental Awareness.

  5. Hence the closing of the day’s program was conducted too. Mr. Preeven Rai, Principal of St. Peters School delivered a lecture related to environmental awareness. Similarly Dr. B. B. Gurung, Curator of Kalimpong Science Centre also delivered a lecture to the students regarding “Environment Day” and its importance. He also made the students aware that simple planting trees does not solve the problem but by protecting of existing plant and the newly planted trees is must to save our earth. He also touched the matter related to Global Warming and its impact. He also explain source of carbon dioxide, methane, CFC, oxide of nitrogen etc which has vital role in increasing the global temperature.

The result of the Painting Competition that was organized on 5th June 2011 is as follows:

Class I – Arpita Thapa: 1st of Buds Nursery School.

Class II – Nikita Pradhan: 1st of Buds Nursery School.

Class III – Deepti Labar: 1st of Bethany School.

Class IV – Kalpana Chettri: 1st of St. Peters School.

Training on Organic Mushroom Cultivation: 17th -18th June’2011

Two days training program on “Organic Mushroom Cultivation” was organized by Kalimpong Science Centre from 17th till 18th of June 2011. Instructors from Ghoom, Darjeeling Shri Wangchu Sherpa, Druk Mushroom Farm and Mrs. Malati Sherpa, Druk Mushroom Farm trained the house wives, self help group and local peoples.

There were total 25 participants from different area of Kalimpong for the above said program.

Mr. Sherpa and Mrs. Sherpa gave the trainees all the required information for the cultivation of Oyster Mushroom. They laid emphasis on the following matter:

a.      Construction of the farm house.
b.      How to prepare the straw.
c.      How to use the seeds during planting.
d.      What are the measures they have to follow during making the mushroom, cylinder?
e.      How the cylinder prepared should be kept.
f.       How to harvest the mushroom.
g.      Preventive measures to be taken against diseases and infection.

23rd Sept’ 2011: 3rd Pre-Anniversary Programme of Kalimpong Science Centre

Kalimpong Science Centre had organized a Sit and Draw Competition and Essay Writing Competition for students of Darjeeling district. This competition was held keeping in mind the 3rd Anniversary of Kalimpong Science Centre which will be celebrated on 2nd of October’2011.

The competition begun with a small condolence meeting in memory of the victims of the earthquake that had struck Darjeeling District and Sikkim 18th September’ 2011. The teachers and the students lit candles praying for those soles that had lost their lives in the natural calamities.

The Sit and Draw Competition was organized for students of different levels which are as follows:

Nursery level where 9 schools had participated, there were 85 participants for the same and the theme was “Butterfly”

Primary level where 4 schools had participated, there were 19 participants for the same and theme was “My School Bag”

Open level where 6 schools had participated, there were 109 participants for the same and topic was “House Damaged by Earthquake and Landslide”

An Essay Competition was also held for students of classes XI and XII where 5 schools had participated and 31 students had participated. The topic for the essay was “I Felt the Tremor”.

2nd Oct’ 2011: 3rd Anniversary Programme of Kalimpong Science Centre

Kalimpong Science Centre observed its 3rd Anniversary on 2nd October’2011. On this day following programmes were organized:

(i)
                  Prize distribution: Sit and Draw Competition and Essay Writing Competition for students of Darjeeling district were conducted on 23rd Sept’2011 and all the participants awarded with certificate of participation and winner with trophy & certificate on 2nd October’2011.

Inter College Power Point Presentation Contest on Effect of Earthquake on Himalayan Belt and its Consequences: There were two colleges from Darjeeling for the participation in this contest. They are St. Joseph’s College, Darjeeling and Ghoom Jorebunglow Degree College, Darjeeling.

Seminar on medicinal plants entitled “Medicinal Plants: Wealth of the Region” & “Medicinal Plants Exhibition” (VIEW IMAGES)

 

Kalimpong Science Centre has organized “School Level Medicinal Plant Exhibition and Seminar” and “Seminar from the renowned Scientists on the Medicinal Plants” for the general masses and students. The main motive of the program was to educate & aware the students about medicinal plants found in their surroundings.  Darjeeling district being a terrain with huge verities of medicinal plants but still remains unexplored and undocumented. The documentation of these medicinal plants and its patents are highly needed.

The program was funded by Dept. of Science & Technology, Govt. of West Bengal.

The program was held for two days i.e. 12th and 13th of November’ 2011.

In the first day i.e. 12th November 2011 an exhibition of medicinal plants was held where 11 schools had participated. Each school had brought ten to fifteen lived medicinal plants in separate pots with vivid description about the plant and its uses.  On 13th November 2011 a seminar was held where eminent personals from different colleges/university had been invited. Principals/Headmasters, common peoples, scholars and students from different school had attended the seminar. During the seminar the botanist working in the field of medicinal plants delivered lectures with power point presentation showing the hidden wealth in the form of medicinal plant that grows around us. Those eminent botanists who participated in the seminar working in the field of medicinal plant are as follows;

The outcome of the program was very educative as well as informative. In this program the students not only became familiar with the medicinal plants they can find around them but also got ideas so as how these plants could be used. The Principal/Teacher-in- Charge/Headmaster/Teachers who attended the seminar and the exhibition were morally boosted up to take initiative to make a medicinal garden in their respective schools so that the all the students could see them and use it practically in their school itself and in their daily life.

Kalimpong Science Centre in the other hand has decided to document all those medicinal plants exhibited in the form of monograph and has decided to motivate each & every schools in the formation of medicinal gardens in their schools through “Science Club” which has already been registered under this Centre.
